Pictures Save Shelter Animal’s Lives

JEFFERSON PARISH (WGNO) - A picture says a thousand words but a picture can also save a life.  Several volunteer photographers are using their pictures to do just that.  News With A Twist reporter Deepak Saini shows you how a single close-up could mean a second chance for shelter animals.

Photographers are an interesting breed.  They view life through the lens of a camera.  Whether it’s the crinkle of a bottle or the squeeze of a ball, any sound will do to get that lucky shot.

“Oh that’s perfect,” says photographer Rachel Ruth.

Rachel Ruth and Leona Hopkins aren’t just taking photos, they’re saving lives at the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter.

Felix heads in for his close-up.  Putting on his best face will increase his chances for adoption.

“You might be scared to come into the shelter, you don’t know what you’re going to find, but if we take this awesome picture and you see how pretty this dog is, and you’re like, I have to have this dog.”

Which dog would you rather adopt?  The one locked in a kennel or one smiling on a fancy set?

“Adopters online are finding our pets and driving across the country or flying into town just because they fell in love with a photograph online,” says Jacob Stroman with the Jefferson SPCA.

The photographers are volunteers, spending countless hours and thousands of dollars of their own money on equipment.

No sound is off limits.

“We will do anything and everything to get a dog’s attention,” says photographer Leona Hopkins.

But like any animal lover, there’s always that one that captures your heart.

2 month old Beckham is a stray.  The innocent puppy has his whole life ahead of him.  This could be his last chance at finding a forever home.  In the end, every click is worth it.

“I love puppies.  You’re so cute.  You’re a smelly puppy though,” says Ruth.

If you’re interested in being a volunteer photographer at the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter, they’ll train you.
