ST. TAMMANY PARISH (WGNO) - A Northshore woman is hospitalized after two escaped pit bulls attacked her.
St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office says the woman was walking her miniature collie along the Belair subdivision pathway when the pit bulls charged.
“It`s awful. I hope the lady is ok,” says neighbor Cathy Freese. “It’s frightening to think that dogs can get out and attack you while you`re out walking.”
The woman was treated for bite wounds to her left arm and left leg.
Her do was taken to a local veterinary clinic where its condition is unknown.
When a neighbor heard the screams for help he took out his 9 mm and fired at the attacking pit bulls.
That neighborhood walkway is kind of behind houses,” says Freese. “So I’m glad somebody heard and was able to come out and help the lady.
One pit-bull was killed instantly. The other wounded pit-bull ran off but was eventually caught and put down.
The dog’s owner Leonard Harvey didn`t want to be interviewed on TV but told WGNO he doesn`t know how his pit bulls got out.
He was issued a misdemeanor summons for violating the parish leash law.
Harvey also said he’s very sorry and concerned about the woman’s condition.
