NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) - Happy Johnson is a former White House intern who also helped drive an Emergency Response vehicle in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
Since then, Johnson is making it his mission to help educate local kids about coastal restoration through his books.
His book “The Adventures of Happy & Big Wanda Backyard Bayou” helps simplify for kids the importance of taking action to help save the diminishing coast.
“We need healthy bayous to protect us. It’s a crisis we experience everyday. I want to get kids interested in the wetlands at an early age and make science fun,” Johnson said.
This author understands that for most kids bayous like Bayou Bienvenue in the Lower 9th Ward are all about alligators and fish.
He wants them to know that there is so much more to them, and he wants them to understand how bayous can provide protection from strong storms.
“I want to bring the wetlands alive for kids. Simplify preparedness and the role our wetlands play as a first line of defense,” he said.
Happy started his own Foundation called “Team Happy Foundation”, which gives books to kids in need.
