NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – The New Orleans City Council gave the go ahead for a controversial new mid-rise hotel in the Warehouse District Thursday. The Fillmore Hotel will be built on the 600 block of Commerce Street.

Nearby neighbors and business owners didn’t want the hotel because they said it wouldn’t fit the historic look of the area.

“The approval of this project as proposed is sure to be a landmark decision that would encourage more and more developers to file plans as large and crazy as they want and only bring them down little-by-little as faced in opposition until it’s finally accepted while still breaking other zone ordinances,” neighbor Scott Schroth said.

Hotel developers decreased the height from 9 stories to 5 to get the council’s approval.

Hotel officials say it will create 85 full-time jobs.

The cost of the project is estimated at $35 million.
