Essence Festival goers have packed the Mercedes-Benz Superdome for a second the second night of musical performances.
There’s a long list of headliners scheduled throughout the weekend ; including New Orleans native Ledisi.
The R&B Diva sat one-on-one with our Darian Trotter to talk about the homecoming.
She’s an R&B recording artist with a very memorable and melodious voice; and the eight-time Grammy Award nominee is back in her native New Orleans to celebrate 20-years of Essence.
“Yeah I’m excited about it. I’m excited about my show. I’m excited about the people. It’s going to be a good weekend.”
She’s again excited to join the tanks of headliners like Prince, Janelle Monae, Mary J. Blige, and Jill Scott. After 12-years of performing at Essence, this year will be the second time Ledisi will take the main stage. Fans will hear songs from her new hit CD “The Truth.” It’s an album she says that was inspired by a failing relationship.
“I only have a little time to make a big impact and I think it’s going to be even better than last year. I’m really looking forward to it.”
This weekend Ledisi is endorsing get favorite haircare line, Design Essentials.
“I love it because it’s, it caters to natural hair that’s the first thing, I have a product that feels good on my hair and it’s not heavy.” “Even when you don’t have your hair done Design Essentials at least let’s you look presentable to get through something.”
We had to ask….
Ledisi’s homecoming falls less than a week after the Bourbon Street shooting that killed a Houma woman, and injured nine other people. In a word Ledisi finds it disturbing.
“It’s disturbing for me and all I can do is uplift and empower men and women and tell them there’s another way.”
She uses her music as a testimony.
“So when they ask me why I’m smiling like a fool I blame you, oh baby. I blame you ah yeah.”
Ledisi says her new album is a reflection of her journey of self discovery. She’s set to perform on the main stage Saturday at 7:45pm.
