PONCHATOULA, La. (WGNO) – Will he be a quarterback at Georgia Tech? Or a cornerback at LSU? That is the question for our Voodoo Athlete of the Week.
Ponchatoula quarterback Christian Campbell committed to Georgia Tech this month. The Jackets were one of a handful of schools to recruit him as a quarterback.
But Campbell will also attend the LSU camp. The tigers are recruiting him as a defensive back.
Ponchatoula head coach Hank Tierney said Campbell’s dilemma is similar to former Shaw quarterback Mickey Joseph, who signed with Nebraska as an option quarterback, but had offers to play defense.
“I remember Mickey Joseph at Nebraska. He was being recruited to play other positions. And, four years later, Mickey Joseph wished he had played another position,” Tierney explained. “If you asked Mickey Joseph right now, he would say I wished I had listened to Pete Jenkins and played cornerback at LSU. So you never know. You just never know.”
Campbell has his test score, and on the field he’s been special. He was the district most valuable player, accounting for 28 touchdowns and 1,784 rush yards.
Tierney said Campbell is a special talent, and he’s our New Orleans Voodoo Athlete of the Week.
