NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) - Crews are making progress on phase two of the Smoothie King Center renovation. The exterior will get a new look. New glass will be added, fans will soon have a more spacious lobby and box office area. Plus more glass will be added to the entryway.
But the biggest upgrade is the new color for the outside.
“One of the goals for this projects here is to create a new and exciting building to compliment the new Pelicans and the new look the Pelicans have brought to basketball here in New Orleans,” Alan Freeman, Smoothie King General manger said. But he wouldn’t say what color the arena will be.
The updates aren’t just for the show, they’re meant to brand the building while promoting the pelicans.
“The teams obviously are very valuable assets to the City of New Orleans. They want to support the teams as opposed to subsidizing them, if you will. They wanted to put their own money into the assets they already own and then let the team utilize those assets to generate money to support their operations,” Freeman explains.
The $50-million renovation is still on schedule to be finished this fall. The Smoothie King Center closes completely in August and will re-open in October, just in time for the Katy Perry concert October 8th.
