ASCENSION PARISH  – A brother and sister were killed when an out-of-control car veered off the road and ran over them late Tuesday afternoon.

WBRZ reports the pair was fishing with their father and two other men near Bayou Manchac when an SUV drove off Bluff Road and hit them. The children ages 6 and 9 were pronounced dead at the scene. The three adults were taken to the hospital.

The wreck happened in an area with a deep curve about three miles south of Interstate-10. Drivers who use the highway often said the area is a popular fishing spot.

Louisiana State Police believe the driver of the SUV was not under the influence, but a toxicology test will be performed.

Charges have not been filed, but the accident remains under investigation.
