JEFFERSON PARISH (WGNO) – A new carnival krewe hopes to thrive where others have failed.

The Jefferson Parish Council is green lighting the way for the Krewe of Athena to roll next year.

Athena will be the first predominately African-American, female krewe in Jefferson Parish.

The move comes as the parish is looking at ways to improve the carnival season.

Other Jefferson Parish Krewes have been fighting to keep their riders who are opting to join larger organizations that parade in New Orleans.
