Akilah Monifa wasn’t a foodie until she lost 222 pounds. She started with small changes. She gave up diet soda first. At her heaviest, Monifa weighed over 400 pounds. She says there was no one moment when she realized she needed to lose weight. Now 222 or so pounds lighter, she feels a new kind of confidence. “I even walk different,” she said. She stayed home at first so she could watch her diet closely, but now she ventures out. This photo was taken at a happy day in the press box in May.
