XINXIANG CITY, China – It’s probably one of the worst ways to die. A man and his mother were killed last week and three others were critically injured after wading in knee-deep sewage looking for a cell phone.
According to the South China Morning Post, a woman accidentally dropped her brand new cell phone costing 2,000-yuan ($320) in an open-pit toilet.
Her husband jumped in to retrieve it but quickly lost consciousness.
In a panic, the man’s mother jumped into the toilet to help her son, but she too quickly lost consciousness, the paper said.
After seeing her husband and mother-in-law faint the woman who originally dropped the phone also fainted.
The father-in-law and two neighbors who jumped inside to aid the victims also fainted.
Finally, villagers tied a rope on to rescuers and they took turns pulling the six people out of the pit.
The woman’s husband and mother-in-law died at the hospital while the woman, her father-in-law, and a neighbor were all injured.
Villagers told the paper the victims were in the waste for no more than five minutes.
