nopdNEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – An audit released by the New Orleans inspector general says the city’s police department misclassified dozens of rape cases between 2010 and 2013, violating internal policy.

The audit looked at data voluntarily reported to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report. It showed that forcible rape cases in New Orleans during the three year period were significantly lower than other cities with high crime rates.

Auditors found that of the 90 forcible rape cases, 46 percent were misclassified and not reported to the FBI.

Auditors also found that there were internal policy violations including failure to complete incident reports, lack of timely supervisor review of reports, and failure to remit evidence.

Despite the misclassifications, NOPD Superintendent Ronal Serpas said the department did not purposely trying to fudge the numbers.
