Brother Martin, Shaw Open with Playoff Wins

Brother Martin’s Corey Giaconi allowed a home run to Tyler St Phillip on the first pitch, and no more.

Giaconi tossed a complete game as second seeded Brother Martin beat 31st seeded St Paul 4-1 Monday in a 5A playoff game at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

Three of Brother Martin’s 4 runs came on extra base hits. Greg Deichmann tripled to give the Crusaders at 2-1 lead in the 3rd. In the 6th, Rafael DeRoche doubled in a pair of runs with a hit to deep left.

Brother Martin hosts either Zachary or West Monroe in a second round best two of three series starting Friday.

At Shaw, the Eagles held off Holy Cross 11-9. Shaw had an 11-3 before the Tigers scored 6 in the top of the 7th. Shaw will host either St. Amant or Fontainebleau in the second round in a best two of three series.
