Murder Victim Crashes Into Senior’s Home
A man shot multiple times veered off the road and into a home.
Now the homeowner is left to deal with the damage.
WGNO News Reporter Darian Trotter spoke to the elderly woman, who now needs a helping hand.
“Boom, boom, boom,” homeowner Thelma Hines recounted.
Thelma Hines was just about to turn in for bed, when she got an unexpected visitor.
“And all of a sudden I heard something sound like a freight train.”
Someone had been shot outside her New Orleans East home. Someone who succumbed to his injuries behind the wheel of his truck, plowed down a stop sign, and went crashing through Ms. Thelma’s front door.
“I thought it was a tornado at first,” she said. “I just didn’t know what to think, and I just started screaming and hollering.”
The emotional damage is still taking its toll. So too is the structural damage; inside and out.
“All of the wall and the fixings was knocked down with the truck.”
It’s been a week, since her Lomond Road home got patched up with boards and blankets.
It’s a Band-Aid approach to damage that will obviously require more extensive repairs.
The front door and the bedroom wall.
“It was like it was peeling and coming back this way and coming at me and I couldn’t believe that. “And I just started screaming and hollering and jumped over there on the floor.”
The 75-year old grandmother can’t fathom how much all of this will cost.
“And I’m on a fixed income and all my family’s struggling so. “We don’t really have the funds to fix the house and to fix the inside of my bedroom and the columns torn down off the front.”
The retired nurse has spent a career patching up and fixing on others.
Now she needs someone to take care of her.
“I sure want my house, my walls fixed if somebody could help me.”
Because the driver was uninsured Ms. Thelma can’t turn to his insurance company for repairs.
