NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) - Every so often, you’ll see a car with a missing hubcap but in a place like New Orleans, it’s way too often! Over the years, numerous reports have ranked our roads some of the worst in the nation, so our cars are used to taking a beating. News With A Twist reporter Deepak Saini shows us why many drivers are dealing with “Hubcap Hell.”
Another Hubcap bites the dust. A typical New Orleans drive feels bumpy, and no matter where you look, you see cars that look sort of half-dressed.
Driver Jessie Hillaker admits, “I have no hubcap.”
It was last seen rolling down the Pontchartrain Expressway.
Hillaker adds, “The roads in New Orleans are very rough. They need a lot of work. They need a lot of love.”
Another driver, David Pearson, says “I lost them one at a time. I actually pulled off the fourth one. If you come around, you can see, I don’t have any hubcaps on this side either.”
Hillaker lost three hubcaps. But why pull off the fourth?
He says, “I thought it would look better but it looks like crap anyway, so…”
Sometimes no matter how hard you try, it’s tough to keep a hubcap on. So, instead of dealing with hubcap hell, drivers are going to a place called “Hubcap Heaven.”
Hubcap Heaven manager, Emmett Hummel says, “We have quite a few people who come in and they lose the same hubcap on the same wheel all the time.”
As long as there are bumps in the road, they have you, well, your wheel covered.
Hummel says, “We love potholes. We’re thinking about starting a “Save the Pothole Society,” so we can stay in business.”
Losing a hubcap is like losing a badge of honor and some car owners yearn to feel home again.
If Hillaker could send a message to her missing hubcap it would be, “Come back home.”
