It was a night for first time champions in Division III at the state soccer tournament.

Pope John Paul II won its first soccer title, 2-1 over Newman. The Jaguars reached the semifinals and the finals for the first time in school history. Senior Jessica Mahoney scored both goals for the Pope John Paul. In the first half, Mahoney’s left foot shot found the right corner from 20 yards out.

In the 70th minute, Mahoney avoided a defender and beat the goalkeeper with a quick shot with her right foot.  Mahoney’s dad, JB III is the team’s head coach.

“With my senior year, and being with my Dad, this makes it very special,” said Mahoney.

In the boys championship, Lusher won in the 79th minute on a goal from Alex Fuselier. Northlake Christian had tied on a free kick and a header from Mason Morise.

Lusher won its first state championship in any team sport.
