Tuesday afternoon, a double shooting in LaPlace left neighbor checking on loved ones and looking over their shoulders.

“I went home, checked my house, checked my sheds, made sure everything was alright,” said Sean McGraw who lives near the LaPlace Feed and Supply store on Sleepy Redwood Street.

McGraw lives near the store.  He said he’d shopped there a few times and remembered Constance and Steve Finckbeiner as nice yet hard-working people.

Earlier in the afternoon, St. John deputies say two people entered the couple’s feed store, shot them, and robbed the place.  Steve Finckbeiner died at the scene.  Sheriff Mike Tregre said Constance Finckbeiner was alert and talking as she was rushed to the hospital.

Soon after the attack, the sheriff’s office announced it had detained two persons of interest in the case who were found about a quarter-mile from the scene.  But as of Tuesday night, the pair had not been officially named suspects.

Tregre said his deputies had a pretty good idea of who robbed the store thanks to security camera footage from neighbors.

“We are using that video to give us leads based on clothing, physical description,” the sheriff said.

Tregre also said his deputies recovered some of the things stolen from the store but did not elaborate on exactly what was taken.
