To mark this 199th anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans, the Chalmette Battlefield plan a re-enactment later this week with soldiers, cannon fire, and stories of the battle.

Events there began Wednesday morning with a wreath laying ceremony.

The Ursuline Academy also marked the anniversary with a mass Wednesday afternoon.

In 1815, the Ursuline Sisters prayed for the people of New Orleans during the battle.

General Andrew Jackson acknowledged the help from Heaven that allowed the city to come together to defeat the British.

During the mass, the message to the crowd was similar — The city can continue to win its battles if the people stick together and rely on their faith.
