The accolades just keep pouring in for New Orleans. Now, National Geographic has named the city one of the 20 must-see destinations for 2014.
“New Orleans, like Rome or hope, is eternal,” gushes the opening line of the Nat Geo Traveler article. It goes on to tell readers worldwide why they need to get themselves to New Orleans as soon as possible.
Naturally, the city’s tourism leaders, like Mark Romig of the New Orleans Marketing Corporation, are thrilled: “It’s a ranking we treasure. It’s humbling, but we want to tell the world.”
The article calls New Orleans “imperishable” and touts the city’s authenticity. When it comes to food, we have a cuisine that’s all our own. Celebrations? No one does it quite the way we do. And the music, “unrivaled,” gushes the writer…and readily available on the city’s streets. That marks a stunning turnaround for a city that many declared dead after Katrina’s visit eight years ago. And, on top of that, no other city in North America, not New York, not San Francisco, made the cut.
“This is a global ranking, one we are extremely proud of,” adds Romig. “It’s such an honor to be the only city chosen in North America.”
