It’s the dawn of a new era for basketball fans in New Orleans.
“Wonderful for the city, wonderful for all the fans. We have a great team and we’re looking forward to a great season,” says one Pelicans fan.
“I’ve been looking forward to it ever since last season ended,” says a Pelicans fan.
“When we first tried to get a team people said we couldn’t get one and then said we couldn’t keep one and then they said if we got one they would leave, so tonight is really the beginning of a new relationship,” says New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu.
Tonight the Pelicans take ownership of their new identity, spruced up uniforms, revamped arena, and they finally show off their new mascot: Pierre the Pelican.
Fans hope with this new identity comes new opportunities. They say this May be the season the team returns to the playoffs after a two year absence.
