Tulane shut down Tulsa Saturday, and erased a lot of negative football history in the process.
The Wave’s 14-7 win made Tulane bowl eligible for the first time 2002. Tulane also posted its first win over Tulsa since 1968.
Back up quarterback Devin Powell led the Wave to their fourth straight win. Powell threw touchdown passes of 19 yards to Justyn Shackleford and 33 yards to Ryan Grant.
Grant’s 33 yard TD catch came after Tulane was the beneficiary of a replay reversal on fourth and three at the Tulsa 40. Ryan Grant caught a pass from Devin Powell and was initially ruled out of bounds just shy of the 37 yard line.
The series occurred early in the third quarter. After the Wave scored to take the lead, the Tulane defense took over.
The Wave held Tulsa to 139 yards and forced three turnovers.
Head coach Curtis Johnson has likely now done something not done since Tommy Bowden in 1998. That is lead Tulane to a bowl game in his second season as head coach.
