Last Thursday against Haynes, Jackson Jansen of Country Day was on the sideline minding his own business when head coach Richard Wood called on Jansen to attempt a 55-yard field goal.
“I was sitting on the sideline,” Jansen told WGNO Sports, “and [coach] said, ‘Go kick the field goal.’ “
Jansen’s kick was good. He said in practice he will try six or seven from 55 yards out and maybe make one, but that is practice; this was a real game.
“I didn’t know exactly where we were on the field,” Jansen said. “I couldn’t see the line. And they said, ‘Go kick the field goal.’ I said, ‘Whoa! That is a 55-yard field goal. I hope I make it.’ ”
“The kids wanted to see,” Coach Richard Wood said. “They knew he could do it. It was perfect.”
Jansen is far more modest. He said the boot was wind aided.
Wood said Jansen gets his kickoffs in the end zone about 90% of the time, but he does not want to kick in college.
Wood said Jansen has a year to change his mind, and he hopes he does. If not, this was a boot to remember.
