Saturday afternoon, Tulane football can take a major step forward. If the Green Wave defeats Tulsa, Tulane is bowl eligible for the first time since 2002.

Tulane is winning despite being 113th in the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) in total offense. The Wave is 7th in turnover margin and 13th in rushing defense.

Why are the Green Wave winning? Well, for starters, they have better players: a pair of junior college transfers, quarterback Nick Montana and defensive end Tyler Gilbert have been big contributors. Fifth year transfer nose tackle Chris Davenport of LSU has anchored the middle.

And there’s something else: this club has some true grit.

Two weeks ago, Tulane beat East Carolina, despite Montana missing the game with a separated shoulder. Backup Devin Powell performed solidly.

I am not telling you how to spend your hard earned money, but this is a good group that plays very hard. If you went to see them play, I don’t think you would be disappointed.
