Buddy D would have loved this past weekend. Legendary New Orleans sportscaster Buddy Diliberto craved the trifecta at the Fair Grounds and probably hit more of them there than the trifecta that hit over the weekend: the Saints, LSU, and Tulane all won!
Buddy would talk about it when it happened because it happened so rarely, but this weekend all three took care of business.
Tulane is just 2 wins away from being bowl eligible for the first time since the Carter administration. Ok, it hasn’t been that long but it’s been awhile. 11 years to be exact.
That was about the time LSU started the tear they’ve been on for the past decade or more. Just a few short years ago, the 1958 national champs, Billy Cannon, and the Heisman trophy was the greatest time in LSU football history. Now it’s probably the third greatest.
If you’re a Tiger fan today, it’s all about winning seasons and bowl games. It’s also about SEC and national championships too. Outside of what former Tiger coach Nick Saban is doing in Tuscaloosa, LSU is as good as any college football program in America.
And how bout dem Saints? 5-and-0 and a ranked defense to go along with that top five offense. Rob Ryan’s boys have given up the 4th fewest points in the league and have the 11th ranked overall defense. That’s amazing.
Almost as amazing as Tulane, LSU, and the Saints all winning on the same weekend. Enjoy it!
