Only three unbeaten teams remain in the NFL and the New Orleans Saints are one of them.
The more the Saints keep winning, the more curious fans are about the secrets of Saints players.
Wgno stopped by Lucy’s in the Warehouse District the day after the Saints extended their undefeated record to 5-0, where there’s a treasure trove of ‘Who Dat’ secrets to unlock.
“The only people who knew it where the guys that were in the huddle and the coaches,” recalls Lucy’s GM Deborah Schumacher about the secret Drew Brees shared after the Super Bowl parade, “Drew Brees got off the float and instead of going to the event, he came here.”
Up till then, what Brees famously chanted in the pre-game huddle to motivate the team, was a mystery.
“Then decided that he was going to do his huddle call-out and share it with the world from right behind our bar,” says Schumacher. “And the crowd went absolutely ballistic. And he told that it was a quote from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.”
She says secrets on Lucy’s Saint’s Wall of Fame are legendary, “Just about every Saints player that is around since the early 90’s since Lucy’s opened has been here. We’ve got Lance Moore up at the top and we’ve got Pierre Thomas.”
Not only do the Saints players hang at Lucy’s, they also eat at Lucy’s.
Lucy’s Chef Edwin knows a few secrets of what food is fueling the Saints to victory, “They come over here we try to make the best we can.”
“They come straight to the kitchen,” says Edwin. “We already know what they like. They like the quesadillas. Pierre Thomas, he comes here every Thursday we see him here after the game. He likes to eat the grilled fish tacos. He loves it!”
Schumacher says the secret is out in the Warehouse District, the best chance to see a Saints player besides the Superdome on game day, is at Lucy’s, “The players feel like they have somewhere they can go and feel safe and have fun. When they get the energy from the fans it’s incredible.”
