(from St. Charles Parish) – The St. Charles Parish Emergency Operations Center is closely monitoring the track of Tropical Storm Karen in the Gulf of Mexico.
The parish is currently under a tropical storm watch. The current forecast from the National Hurricane Center has Karen moving rapidly across the gulf before interacting with a cold front. This interaction will cause the path of Karen to shift eastward with an eventual landfall near the Alabama / Florida border.
NHC calls for winds of between 25 mph and 35 mph in our area with possible tropical storm force gusts beginning late Friday and going into Saturday. Rainfall expectations are 2 to 4 inches, with tides 2 to 4 feet above normal.
At this time officials urge residents to take this weekend to shore up their own emergency plans and disaster supply kits should they become necessary. Residents should also begin preparing their homes for windy conditions and heavy rain, including picking up and/or securing items that could be blown around and clearing culverts and drains on their properties.
Because of the potential for higher than normal tides in the LaPlace / Montz area, sand and bags will be available at Montz Park, 100 Calcagno Street in Montz. Please bring a shovel.
Power outages may be possible with this storm scenario. Residents should call 1-800-ENTERGY to report outages.
All parish pump stations and generators are operable and fueled, and canals have been pumped down.
An announcement about the status of parish Saturday morning recreational games will be made on Friday.
Any questions may be directed to the St. Charles Parish Emergency Operations Center at (985) 783-5050 24 hours a day.
