The city of New Orleans is telling people who live in low-lying areas to be ready for a possible storm surge from Tropical Storm Karen.

Deputy Mayor Col. Jerry Sneed says the city will meet with Entergy officials on Friday to go over the company’s emergency response plan.

Also on Friday, the city will open its EOC.

Sneed says people need to be ready to move their cars to higher ground, but he did not give the okay yet to use any neutral ground.  He’s urging neighbors to be prepared for a rough few hours.

“Prepare for a tropical storm, category 1.  You need to have water.  You need to be prepared for possibly losing electricity,” Sneed said.

AT&T also plans to have back-up generators at key cell towers as well as mobile equipment ready to fill any gaps in cell service.
