“I’ve never seen anything like that before,” says a witness, “He was just shooting, gun sideways, just letting the rounds go and go and go.”
Witnesses are in shock.
“It was people. It was a mother and a daughter. It was human beings. I don’t know what they were doing, but they were running for their lives.”
They tell us a man followed a mother and her 7-year-old daughter over the train tracks. They say he was continuously shooting at them as the two furiously tried to cross Airline Highway in Hollygrove.
The nightmare unfolded in broad daylight, at around 4:30pm, at the busy intersection of Airline and Palmetto Street near the Orleans Parish, Jefferson Parish line.
“It was like a firecrackers going off in the New Year; round after round after round.”
“We all took off down there to see what we could do, so we got down there and applied first aid as quickly as possible,” says Melissa who administered help until emergency crews arrived.
Melissa was one of the first on the scene. She says the woman had been shot three times and the little 7-year-old girl was shot once in the face. Hours later blood still stains the pavement.
Witnesses says officers were nearby and one was almost ready to shoot.
“When he saw that he took off because the officer here had his gun drawn and was ready, but there was too many safety issues,” says Melissa, “It’s a shame. They’re killing their own kids. It’s terrible.”
Police say the woman is in her mid 30’s. They say both victims were admitted in serious condition.
As of tonight they believe this started as a disturbance in another part of Hollygrove and ended on Airline Highway.
