Back to School health checklist: 5 things you must do

The happy hooligans are going off to school again. Yes it is that time of year, time to start preparing for your kids to go back to school.  Here are 5 things you must do:

1st on the list: Get them to their doctor for their yearly checkup.  The checkup includes making sure theirs immunizations are up to date.  Most schools will not allow your child to start school without current immunization records. Don’t forget about the HPV vaccine to protect your kids, yes it is now recommended for boys.

#2. Time to get their eyes checked. Did you know as many as 1 in 20 kids cannot see out of both of their eyes? Kids who can’t see will not perform well in school.

Smile. #3 is going to the dentist for that dental checkup.  Kids are to see a dentist every 6 months starting at age 1.

What about those back packs? The right back pack is #4 on the Must do list. Did you know that the weight of the backpack should never be more than 10% of your child’s weight?  The straps should be wide and padded.  Always make sure they use both straps and don’t straddle one strap over one shoulder, this can lead to muscle strain and nerve damage.  If your child’s back pack load is heavier than 10% of their body weight, poor kid, consider a rolling backpack.

#5. Keep an eye out for bullying. Be sure your kids know that bullying is never ok.
