Could the Terrebonne Parish Council ban public sleeping? According to the Daily Comet newspaper, the Public Services Committee will tackle that issue tonight in Houma.
Some say it’s a way to move the homeless people downtown. The complaints say that the homeless are either sleeping or hassling people as they walk by.
The ordinance would allow officers to rouse someone who’s been sleeping in the park for too long. Violators could be charged with a misdemeanor and face a fine of up to $500 or even jail time.
The American Civil Liberties Union says what’s really happening is criminalizing homelessness.
