Don’t judge a book by its cover. The person who came up with that one deserves a gold star. One of the simplest and most valuable idioms one can live by. Too bad a salesperson in a Switzerland purse shop didn’t follow those wise words.
Oprah Winfrey, with a net worth of about $3 billion, was in Switzerland when she went into a high-end boutique. She liked a particular designer purse and asked to see it. The salesperson told Ms. Winfrey she couldn’t afford it.
Now granted, the retail price of the purse was $38,000 and quite frankly, most of us can’t afford that purse. But Oprah’s not us. Oprah’s not any of us. She earned around $80 million last year or about $200,000 a day. If anyone can afford a $38,000 purse, its Oprah Winfrey.
The shortsighted salesperson lost out on a hefty commission. At just 3%, that would have been over $1000.
Oprah did the classy thing and simply walked out of the store. She’ll take her $3 billion and shop elsewhere, I guess. The designer of the bag will probably send Oprah a freebie and will end up selling a more bags because of it. And there is a fired salesperson in Switzerland that will never ever judge a book by its cover again.
