WGNO News Reporter Darian Trotter spoke to the elderly cancer patient who police say was roughed up and carjacked.
“I was so stunned by what was going on, I couldn’t believe it was going on,” Eustis Guillemet said.
In all of his 79-years, Eustis Guillemet says he’s never experienced the level of violent crime like he did this past weekend.
He was out visiting friends during the Essence Music Festival when he ran into trouble.
Trotter pointed out, “It was here at North Broad and Industry that the victim says he was approached by four men looking for trouble.” “He says they jumped him, threw him to the ground, and then took his car keys.”
“I was getting in my car like that and I saw the four young guys coming and I thought they were going to cross the street, but when I turned my back, one jumped me and started choking me,” Guillemet said.
Trotter asked, “What did they say? well they told me was all they wanted was my car,” Guillemet replied.
New Orleans Police are actively investigating the carjacking; and they are still working to recover the 2000 Nissan Quest.
The vehicle is burgundy in color, and has the license plate WAS-726.
Inside Guillemet says he had valuable property including several of his paintings, and that’s not all.
He also lost a device he needs in his fight with throat cancer.
“Also what was in the car was my chatter box that I use when I speak,” Guillemet explained. “That’s very important.”
Guillemet says he needs his vehicle to get to doctor appointments.
Some of his personal items, like his vehicle registration, were recovered in New Orleans East.
