This year it was R&B recording artist and television and movie actress Brandy Norwood who kicked off the first of three nights in the music celebration known as The Essence Fest.
Much to the delight of onlookers.
Earlier concert goers arrived in advance of the 7pm start time and formed long lined outside the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
“We’re just having a good time, just trying to get our party on, just trying to hear some nice music, some live entertainment and just enjoy the people and different cultures around,” said Antonio Randolph from Boston.
WGNO’s Darian Trotter asked, “What do you think about this crowd? “I think it’s awesome! “Everybody’s looking amazing just ready to party,” replied Lamonica Thomas of Dallas.
Friday night’s line-up includes the vocal talents of not only Brandy, but Maxwell, Jill Scott, Blackstreet, & LL Cool J.
Some crowd favorites ran the gamut.
“Beyonce, and LL Cool J are my favorites,” said Nicole Wilson of Dallas.
“Charlie Wilson! Very excited about him,” Thomas said. “He puts on an awesome, awesome, awesome concert so I’m excited about seeing him again.”
The people in attendance represent a fraction of the estimated 400-thousand people visiting New Orleans during the July 4th weekend.
