LSU’s Jones misses Omaha workout with virus

LSU second baseman JaCoby Jones, who starred in a pair of Super Regional victories, missed Friday’s workout at T.D. Ameritrade Park with an apparent virus.

Head coach Paul Mainieri said he was alerted Thursday night that Jones was ill. Jones has been moved to a private room. He was rooming with Christian Ibarra. Mainieri said he hopes Jones can practice Saturday.

“JaCoby came to the park today and took the team picture. He then went back to the hotel and rested,” said Mainieri.

Jones was spotted in the LSU dugout near the end of the Tigers’ one hour scheduled 3 pm workout.

Jones also missed a game at Alabama this season with a similar virus. Jones was held out of the SEC tournament with a wrist injury.

In the Super Regional, Jones was 5 for 7 with 4 runs scored. Jones had a home run, triple, and double in a pair of victories against Oklahoma.

The Tigers play UCLA Sunday night in the final of four opening round games at the College World Series. First baseman Mason Katz was asked if he had “cabin fever? “Yes,” said Katz. “Sunday night can’t get here soon enough.
