Coach Parker Breaks Down Summer Water Safety

Four area people died from drowning in the past week.

Now the Southeast Louisiana Chapter of American Red Cross is on a “summer water safety campaign” to prevent more.

City pools officially opened Monday for the summer.

Coach J. Parker with the Red Cross was bouncing from pool to pool double checking lifeguard safety plans, “In the swimming pool, in a lake, creek, ocean even in the bathtub, you must know what to do in a situation to be safe.”

Coach Parker says any of this past week’s four drowning could have been prevented, “Another individual was trying to help one of the other young men, and unfortunately the guy perished because swimming skills were not strong enough.”

Coach says the best and most recommended way to prevent drowning is swimming lessons, “Be a part of a swimming program somewhere learning basic swimming skills.”

The Red Cross lifeguard instructor says in every swimming situation, the more eyes and ears paying attention, the better, “That’s a trained water safety instructor, but the parents are sitting in the back watching the instructors while they are doing their job.”

Drowning remains the number one cause of death for children under four.

Coach Parker says lessons for adults who cannot swim are available and recommended.
