Terron ArmsteadCan a rookie third round pick earn a starting job at one of the NFL’s most demanding positions?

Saints rookie Terron Armstead, third round pick from Arkansas-Pine Bluff, was working with the first unit at left tackle in the Saints Organized Team Activity Thursday at the Saints facility.

Armstead has a fan in quarterback Drew Brees.

“Listen if he earns the job, he earns the┬áright to be there. I will have all the confidence in the world in him,” said Brees.

Charles Brown, a former second round pick, was running with the second team. Brown has missed some offseason work after the Saints say Brown suffered an undisclosed injury lifting weights.

Has anything surprised Armstead in his first NFL camp?

Apparently, no.

“Football is football, and I have been playing for a long time,” said Armstead.

Meantime, Saints wide receiver Joe Morgan was practicing, days after being arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated. Morgan was not in the Saints lockerroom when media was allowed in after practice.

“I think each team is faced with it at some point,” said head coach Sean Payton of Morgan’s pending legal difficulty. “It is what it is in regards to the lessson you hope the players, including Joe learn from it. It is our job to keep reinforcing the importance of being smart and making the right decisions. And, it is something that we really try to pride ourselves in since we began here in 2006.”
