Sean Payton, along with some of his coaches and players, got in a round of golf before the start of Tuesday’s practices, which is referred to in the NFL as “organized team activities.”
Payton said that defensive end Will Smith, the club’s longest-tenured current player, will move from right end to right outside linebacker in the 3-4 scheme run by new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan: “Initially, the right outside position will be very similar to what he’s played for us in the past.”
Smith has 67 and a half career quarterback sacks. He is only 9 sacks shy of Pat Swilling for 3rd place on the Saints all-time sacks list.
“One of the challenges with the transition is trying to make sure we put the players on the roster who were on the roster a year ago in the right spot,” Payton explained.
Payton said that second year defensive lineman Akiem Hicks, who showed promise a year ago, will be tried tackle and end.
Payton has seen Hicks on tape and in offseason workouts. Tuesday, he gets an on-field look.
“I am excited to see some of these guys on the field that I have not seen. It is nice.”
