Nola Hooping: A Hip Way To Exercise

It’s exercise in disguise!

Hula hooping is the latest fitness trend.

“It’s a workout, but it doesn’t feel like a workout”.

Kimberly Lobert is the founder and owner of Nola Hooping.  Lobert said an hour’s worth of hula hooping can make you burn betwen 600 and 800 calories.

She decided to start Nola Hooping after realizing all of it’s benefits.

“I took a class, and loved it.  I then got certified in California and started it here in New Orleans.  Nola Hooping teaches physical fitness classes, we do events, and we do parties,”  she said.

Their goal is to get hula-hooping in all the schools because it will help fight child obesity.

Lobert said the proper way to hula-hoop is with one foot in front of the other.

“You have to use your core, use your abdominal muscles.  You don’t want it to look like you are having a convulsion.  That doesn’t look pretty, ”  she said.

Hooping isn’t only for your hips.  Many of her students have learned to hula-hoop around their feet, arms, neck, and chest.

“You’re allowed to be goofy.  That’s how you learn the coolest things,”  Anna Karina Delage said.

These hula hoopers feel it’s not only a fun way to exercise, but it’s a way for them to express themselves.

“I love the hoop.  It’s art,”  Melissa Richmond said.
