New Orleans EMS has confirmed to WGNO News that an accident on I-10 westbound in New Orleans has resulted in one fatality and several minor injuries.
As of 10:50 a.m. Thursday, the westbound lanes of I-10 are shut down between US 11 and the Michoud Exit. All lanes were open in both directions by 12:30 p.m.
New Orleans Police tell WGNO News that the charter bus was filled with 5th graders from Florida taking an overnight field trip in New Orleans. A red vehicle crossed neutral ground on the interstate and went into the path of the bus. After hitting the car, the bus went into the woods.
The driver of the red vehicle was killed in the accident. The bus driver and some students were transported to the hospital, but no severe injuries have been reported.

The New Orleans Police Department’s Fatality Section is investigating a fatality that left an unidentified woman dead. The accident occurred shortly after 10:00 A.M., on I-10 West near the Michoud Boulevard exit.
According to investigators, the woman was traveling eastbound on I-10 in a maroon Honda Accord when her vehicle began to hydroplane and she lost control. The vehicle crossed over the median into the westbound lanes and was then struck by a charter bus. The bus subsequently traveled off the road into the marsh and the vehicle traveled onto the median where it rested.
The charter bus was en route to New Orleans from Crestview, Florida carrying 42 passengers consisting of 5th graders and their chaperones.
Emergency medical technicians arrived on scene and pronounced the driver of the Honda Accord dead. The bus driver and two passengers on the bus were transported to the hospital with minor injuries. A fireman working the scene of the accident suffered a minor hand injury and was also transported to the hospital.
The Orleans Parish Coroner will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Fatality Investigator, Richard Blackman, is in charge of the investigation.
