“I think any parent would say, oh I’d like to go out there like a cowboy and just get him,” says Lawrence Wharton.

It’s a father’s worst nightmare; having his princess come home from school after being sexually assaulted inside a school bus.

Tonight police say it happened to a 16-year-old girl from Crescent Leadership Academy. According to reports, the teen and the suspect, who was also a student, were the last two passengers on the bus, a place you’d expect to be safe.

“I think any parent would say, oh I’d like to go out there like a cowboy and just get him,” says Lawrence Wharton.

Wharton is a retired city bus driver. He says there’s no way a driver could see what’s going on behind seats.

School officials say they have not had any contact with the 16-year-old victim today. They say the investigation is now in the hands of police and that their job is to keep the rest of their students safe for the rest of the year.

In a statement James Berger, Director of Facility Operations writes:

“On Wednesday, May 1, 2013, about 1:20 p.m., a student reported to school officials at Crescent leadership Academy that they had been sexually assaulted on a contracted school bus on Monday, April 29, after the school day had been completed. CLA reported the incident, in accordance with child abuse regulations, to the 5th District Police Department the same day. CLA is cooperating with the investigation regarding this incident and is reviewing its procedures to assure safety on student transportation.”

The NOPD says the teen reported the crime to her guidance counselor. Police know who the suspect is and are investigating.

WGNO has spoken with the contracted bus service, HWM Transportation. An employee there says she does not believe their busses are equipped with surveillance cameras.
