Richard Palmisano, the former police chief of Covington who was fired Friday morning by Mayor Mike Cooper, has informed the city that he will fight his termination through the civil service process.

Cooper cited the recent arrests of two officers who are accused of using excessive force during a shoplifting arrest as reason for the firing.

Cooper says he gave Palmisano a chance to resign before being fired.  The mayor also says he is in no position now to begin accepting applications for a new police chief.

Captain Jack West will command the department on an interim basis.
