Late Tuesday afternoon, police tape blocked both ends of the 4000 block of Baudin Street with crime tape. Along each stretch of tape, friends, family, and neighbors gathered to find out what happened. Initially, all they knew for sure was — a burst of gunfire shattered a quiet evening.
Within minutes, word spread that two people were shot and killed. Shocking people even more was news that an eight-year-old boy was also injured in the attack.
When Superintendent Ronal Serpas walked to speak with reporters, he was called over along the way by a crying woman who also wanted answers. He tied to comfort the woman but could offer little explanation for what happened.
According to Serpas, two men wearing hoodies opened fire on two other men who were sitting on the front porch of a home. Both of the victims died at the scene.
“In the crossfire of the circumstances, a seven or an eight year old boy was shot. He’s in the hospital in critical condition. He’s being cared for. We have every reason to hope and pray he will be okay, but we just don’t know for sure yet,” Serpas told reporters.
Later in the evening, police confirmed the boy was 8 and he had improved to be listed in stable condition.
Police believe the two attackers may have left the scene in a red Chrysler minivan. They believe the van was dumped on Canal Street.
