HUD Inspector General Calls Road Home Elevation Program a Failure

The Inspector General for Housing and Urban development says Louisiana’s Road Home Elevation Program is a failure.

David Montoya says after Hurricane Katrina taxpayers paid $1 billion dollars for homeowners to raise their homes.

He says more than 24,000 homeowners who received as much as $30,000 either pocketed the money or used it for another purpose.

Montoya says $700 million in taxpayer money is missing.

“It’s what you and I give up every single year from our hard-earned wages” said Montoya.

Some lawmakers are calling for stricter guidelines for the $51 billion going to Sandy victims on the east coast.
