HANO Withdraws Hundreds of Section 8 Housing Vouchers

Some housing hopefuls are about to get some unpleasant news.

After long waits, and finally receiving Section 8 housing vouchers, hundreds of families will soon find out they’re being placed back on the waiting list.

Darian Trotter reports on the exclusive details.

“No it don’t surprise me,” tenant Keanca Doucet said. “Nothing surprises me that goes on back here with HANO; nothing.”

She’s frustrated, to say the least, with the Housing Authority of New Orleans.

And given HANO’s recent move she can expect company.

More than 700 families who’ve recently received Section 8 housing vouchers are finding out that they will have to get back in line and wait all over again.

How could this happen? “It’s because of budget cuts and because HANO is currently not able to subsidize those vouchers,” HANO Public Information Officer Leslie Thomas said.

HANOIn a letter being mailed to applicants this weekend, HANO explains a number of circumstances, including an over subscription of vouchers and budget cuts are causing recently issued vouchers to be withdrawn effective immediately.

HANO does not have sufficient federal funds to subsidize additional apartments; at the current time, or the near future.

“It’s important for me to say the 17,000, plus families who are on the Section 8 program that are currently being assisted and currently have subsidized vouchers are not being effected in any way,” Thomas explained.

In other words, only the 700 families who were in the process of finally finding Section 8 housing will have to be placed back on the waiting list in their original order.

WGNO News has learned some of the applicants had been waiting for as long as 4 years.

“I think it’s wrong, just like I said the first time,” HANO voucher holder Doris Dawson said. “That’s not right at all, you know, “What are those people going to do?”

Back at the soon to be demolished Iberville Housing Projects, help from HANO to move out has been slow.

Remaining families have to be out by April 5th.

Trotter asked, “What are you going to do? Aint nothing to do but wait,” Doucet said. “They have to put me out cuz I ain’t leaving; I don’t have no money.”

WGNO News has learned families already receiving assistance take priority.

“We have to wait, so they have to wait.”

In the letter applicants will receive between Saturday and Monday — HANO apologizes for any disruption or disappointment the withdrawal will cause.

Hey this is GOOD NEWS for NOLA as well as those who were rejected vouchers.

    WHY SO?

Of those who got rejected should JOIN the 130,000 who left NOLA after Hurricane Katrina and never came back as they FINALLY KNOW what the REAL WORLD is LIKE and where a GOOD PAYING JOB is LIKE and WHERE people are not shooting each other daily.

The Federal Government's Housing Department is wising up and is asking, "WHY give Section 8 vouchers to a city that already has the highest poverty rate in the nation where there are no good paying jobs to be found in the first place and the schools won't produce decent education for student cause of the OVER-SATURATION of lazy parents who don't care?"

If the Federal Government were to give out Section 8 vouchers to anyone in Louisiana, witch it's already broken system, how can it be of true long term answer to those who apply for it? Should those poor be on Section 8 year after year waiting for a job in a metro area that hasn't had good jobs for 30-40 years?

IF anything, the Fed Government should give a ONE-WAY bus ticket to those who apply for Section 8 to a city, OUTSIDE of
Louisiana so they can develop contacts and get far better training as well as communication skills
in a area that is not burdened like NOLA.

AMEN!! AMEN !! AMEN!! Tell you what I guarantee those who said they have been waiting for 4 years for section 8 wouldn't apply for a school grant or loan. I guarantee they didn't realize that they could have attended a 4-yr college, Delgado or the like, get a degree, or improve themselves to help themselves. No more pity in the Naked City of New Orleans. Game up!! Time to stop sitting by begging for a hand out. Hand outs are for the disabled and the elderly. For those who really need the help this message is not for you. But I guarantee the ones saying 'They gonna have to Put me Out!" are the same ones that won't do anything to help themselves.

Amen you are right, Its sad to say but their are too many lazy young people. They didn't know the hand-outs were going to come to an end. Get out there and work like the rest of us. And you want have to say such dumb remarks.

Well, when you play with those devils, this is the end result. When the Secretary of HUD was down here in New Orleans, those negro leaders was all google-eyes with him taking pictures, and smiling like everything was gonna be all good. And Mr. Gilmore was this "Capt. Save-a-Poor" savior. Well, say hello to the real world, where satan rules, and his name is Mitch Landrieu!!!

Here's an Idea how about you put all the people who are on section 8 and living with a husband whose not on the voucher off the program. Here's another suggestion all the girls on section 8 with recent domestic violence under the same address as their voucher kick them off too. There should be a limit to how long you can stay on if your not elderly or disabled. Example here's a little help for you to get your life together then if your not together by the time this expires then sorry for you. How about do away with the whole program if your only going to give housing to people who sit back and make baby after baby while living on it, Violate their vouchers time and time over with no consequences. Yes I was one of the people who got kicked back on the waiting list and yes i paid rent the 4 years i waited but i needed the help when it came only to get my face cracked by the letter they sent saying your back on the waiting list. HANO is a f#cking joke. Thanks for assisting all those lazy ass, married, black eyed and busted lipped, substance abusing, baby momma's, and leaving someone who could have really used that help like me shut out.
