We know that we should limit added sugars, but they’re not always easy to spot. In today’s Get the Skinny, Molly shows us 3 seemingly-healthy foods that are actually loaded with sugar – but fortunately she has a diet-friendly alternative for each!
Most types of jarred pasta sauce are made with added sugar, and some, like Prego’s Heart Smart sauce, contain 10 grams of sugar in every half-cup serving!
To keep sugars in check, look for pasta sauce made without added sugars, like Sal & Judy’s Heart Smart sauce with just two grams of (naturally-occuring) sugar from tomatoes.
Flavored Greek Yogurt
Brands like Yoplait GREEK and Dannon Oikos can pack in 20-21 grams of sugar, nearly double the 12 grams of protein provided!
The key is to stick with all-natural plain, low-fat Greek yogurt (and add your own fresh fruit), or try Sophie Greek Yogurt, a protein-rich flavored Greek yogurt with zero artificial sweeteners!
Meals like Smart Ones’ Teriyaki Chicken & Vegetables may have just 230 calories, but with more sugar than protein, fiber, or fat, it’s not likely that these frozen dinners will keep you satisfied for long.
A better alternative: Atkins Frozen Dinners. They’re centered on Atkins’ foundation of protein and vegetables, with minimal starchy carbs – just 8 to 11 grams of carbs per meal. And with the exception of Beef Merlot and Italian Sausage Primavera, the Akins dinners are high in protein, with 22 to 26 grams per frozen dinner.
