Rummel beats New Iberia to win state basketball championship

Now, they have won two in 2013.

Dwayne Eugene made both ends of a one and one with 6.9 seconds to play as the 22nd seeded Raiders beat 6th seeded New Iberia 46-44 Friday night at Rummel.

The Yellow Jackets trailed 40-32 but rallied to tie the game. With 1:34 to play, New Iberia’s Mike Sam made a 12 foot jumper and was fouled. Sam’s free throw was good, tying the game at 44.

New Iberia hoped to take the last shot, but the Jackets threw the ball away. In the chase for the loose ball, Sam fouled Dwayne Eugene at midcourt.

Henre’ Tolliver led Rummel with 13 points, including three 3 pointers.

Rummel hosts 3rd seed Comeaux Tuesday night in the 5a quarterfinals.
