Thursday afternoon, Xavier Prep and one of the school’s alumni said the school may not be forced to close after all.

A spokesperson for the school said it is looking at as many options as possible to remain open.

Alumni are planning a brain storming session on Saturday to try to find a solution.

Thursday, Xavier Prep stunned students, parents, and alumni by announcing it would close at the end of the school year.

The Archdiocese of New Orleans says it had nothing to do with the school’s decision to close but is working to help students find a new school to attend next fall.

Xavier Prep first opened its doors 98 years ago.  Back then, it was co-ed, but about four decades ago, it became an all girls school.

Currently about 250 girls attend Xavier Prep.

Some alumni say, if it will save the school and increase enrollment, Xavier Prep should consider going co-ed again.

“If push came to shove and that’s what we had to do, I think we will go back to co-ed,” said alumni Essence Thomas who graduated from the school in 2003.
