Love it, Like it, Hate it: Bacon
Many think of bacon as one of the worst foods we could possibly eat, and keep it just for the occasional indulgence. But in today’s Get the Skinny with Molly, she’ll show us how bacon can actually fit into a heart-smart, low-calorie diet!
- Bacon can be surprisingly low in calories, with 25 to 35 calories and as little as 0.5 grams saturated fat per slice, for even regular pork bacon.
- Salt is the main drawback, with sodium content ranging from 80 to 350 mg per slice.
Nitrite-free center-cut bacon or turkey bacon like Applegate’s Natural Turkey Bacon with 35 calories & 0 saturated fat per slice. (Nitrites are linked to heart disease and certain types of cancer, so look for bacon made without sodium nitrites).
Center cut bacon like Oscar Meyer’s Center-Cut Bacon with 23 calories, 0.5 grams saturated fat, and just over 80 mg sodium per slice.
Turkey bacon like Jennie-O Turkey Bacon, with 30 calories, 2.5 grams saturated fat, and 130 mg sodium per slice.
Thick-sliced bacon like Burger’s Smokehouse Bacon Steak Cuts with 90 calories, 2.5 grams saturated fat, and 350 mg sodium in every slice
