“I want you to walk in and think childhood Christmas relived all over again. The sights, the smells, the sounds, everything that you thought of when you were a kid and you would wake up and get so excited for Christmas morning,” says Michael Murphy whose home is featured in the 37th annual Preservation Resource Center Holiday Home Tour, set for December 8th and 9th in New Orleans.
This Christmas season features six different decked-out mansions and is expected to draw 4,000 guests. Co-chair Katherine Raymond says, “The PRC’s mission is to restore and renovate and revitalize New Orleans architecture and communities and neighborhoods, so this is about the PRC. This is our largest fundraiser so all of our money goes right back into our mission.”
The tour is as much about the holidays as it about the homes themselves. If you’re looking for renovation ideas, you’re sure to find them here. Raymond says, “The majority of the homes have been renovated within the last 2 years, which is a great feature because that way the people looking to renovated have a lot to see and choose from in addition to the people coming to see the 150 plus year old homes of New Orleans.”
Murphy just finished the third renovation to his 160 year old Greek-revival, featuring a new covered patio, intimate wine cellar and chef-inspired kitchen. He says, “That was one of the tricky parts of doing the renovation was to keep it still flowing as part of a home that was built in the 1800’s, but having the modern conveniences of today because I am such a ‘gadgety’ guy that I really wanted that to be there.”
From the hidden fridge in the kitchen to the massive barbeque outside, Murphy strikes the balance between old and new. As you check out his home for yourself on the tour, you just might discover a few new ideas to add to your Christmas wish list!
